Observers are one of the redstone components that many people who are not familiar with redstone are often confused by. Observers are actually very simple, and only have a single function: They give a pulse when a block in front of them "changes". This video has a much more detailed explanation of this, as well as several examples of these "changes".
Redstone Toolbox is a series explaining in-depth most of the components of redstone. I talk about the functions of each block, how to make them, and generally how useful they are. This series is intended to help new redstone engineers learn what each component does, as well as to explain some of the more complex aspects of some of the components.
