I built upon Ethoslab's bit reader concept from episode 475 of his letsplay (this is the device shown at the beginning) to make a rapid addition circuit.
I used the wiring diagram here to build the logic circuit

Water buckets correspond to "1", and Shovels correspond to "0". The place value of each bit reads from left to right, then top to bottom. This is horizontally backwards from the way numbers are normally written.
The adder works with all 54 bits (one per chest slot). I used 10 to make it easier to verify. With 10 bits, it took about 7 seconds to finish. Add 0.4 seconds per every additional bit.
