So far in 1.6 snapshots, it's now possible to have an Iron Farm on top of the nether.

Little quick curiosity video; currently in the 1.6 snapshots it's possible to get villagers above the nether and they also breed above the nether (they don't under the bedrock roof). This would allow iron farms to be possible and other villager contraptions to work in the nether!
