I wrote "Spawning" because they are not really spawning on the piston but they try to spawn on the iron block, but, there are pressure plate on each block, which fail the spawning of the mob, so it move the spawn location 5 block apart from the original spawn position.
If some remember, that's what JL2579 explained in his first witch farm video.
