The Milwaukee County Zoo operates two steam locomotives, number 1916 and 1924. The 15” gauge railroad was built when the zoo was expanded in 1958. Trains run throughout the day, and during busy times, two trains can operate in the same direction.
Both of the steam locomotives were constructed by the Sandley Light Railway Equipment Works in Wisconsin Dells, now the home of 15” gauge, Riverside & Great Northern.
The Milwaukee Zoo is featured on two of our DVDs; “Wisconsin Steam Stories” and “Grand Scale Steam: Three Miniature Railways”.
