It's humble, it's simple, it's incredibly common. But even a pencil requires thousands of people, all over the world, who have never met or even know about each other, to cooperate. It would be a logistical nightmare to organize centrally.
And yet, it happens. All the time. That's the beauty of spontaneous order, what Adam Smith called The Invisible Hand.
So, happy "I, Pencil" Day, and remember: markets are magic.
