It is important to understand that nanoplastic poses a danger to us, not only as a climate-disrupting factor, but, first and foremost, as a threat to life itself within the biosphere, including the species Homo sapiens. This is a catastrophe of humanity’s own making. Without nanoplastic, we would have passed through the current climate cycle just as we had in previous ones—experiencing a degree of natural activation, but without facing the threat of a Siberian plume eruption or other severe catastrophes capable of bringing our existence to an absolute end.
Today, the amount of micro- and nanoplastic in the atmosphere has reached astronomical levels. These are no longer isolated particles. They now constitute a new, permanent component of our atmosphere. Let me remind you that up to 25 million metric tons of plastic particles are transported each year over thousands of kilometers by sea air, ocean spray, snow, and fog—crossing countries, continents, and oceans. And this figure accounts only for the portion of plastic movement that current instruments can roughly detect.
When it comes to nanoparticles, scientists still have very little accurate data on their atmospheric concentration, simply because modern instruments are not yet capable of detecting and distinguishing them reliably. According to preliminary estimates, the concentration of nanoplastic may be several orders of magnitude higher than that of microplastic—but reported values still range from thousands to millions of particles per cubic meter of air. We are quite literally stewing in a soup of plastic dust.
Once exposed to ultraviolet radiation, these particles pose a dual threat: their surfaces become rougher, allowing them to accumulate heavy metals such as lead and mercury. But the core danger of this plastic lies not in its chemical toxicity but in its physics. Each of these trillions of particles functions as an electret.
