Millions of bats exit Borneo’s Deer Cave every night on their hunt for insects. There are about 12 species of bats that live in the cave, and 2 to 3 million of them live there at any given time.
It was spectacular to watch them come out. It was like a “firehose of bats”. The exodus lasted about half an hour or so, and this video only contains some highlights. I witnessed the bats flying on 2 nights, and everything in this video is from just one of those emergences. If the weather is bad and there’s lots of rain, the bats won’t fly because the insects aren’t out.
Deer Cave, one of the largest in the world, lies in Mulu National Park in Malaysian Borneo, not far from the border with Brunei.
