How we animated SpongeBob?

In our video about SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, you’ll get an exclusive look at how we brought SpongeBob and his underwater world to life. We used a specially designed rig that allowed us to animate every part of SpongeBob independently, giving him a unique and lively presence on screen.

Our team, including Jacques Daigle, Animation Supervisor at Mikros Animation, carefully balanced traditional animation techniques with modern technology to enhance SpongeBob’s iconic look. We used hand-painted brush strokes to add a 2D animation effect and relied on sketches and storyboards for reference to keep the animation consistent with the show.

Jacques Daigle, along with Guillaume Dufief, Adrien Montero, and Liam Hill, were instrumental in this process. Their exceptional work earned us a nomination for Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature at the 2021 VES Awards, placing us among the industry’s finest.
