Mike Lents teaches and flight instructs as an Associate Professor of Aviation at the University of North Dakota specializing in Aerodynamics, Aircraft Systems, Human Factors and Aerobatics. He started flying in 2001 at UND earning both his bachelor and master degrees.
Mike Lents is an IAC National Champion flying a Super Decathlon in 2021.
A Master-CFI of Aerobatics since 2013, he has coached the UND Aerobatic Team to 12 National Collegiate Championships, including the most recent victory in 2025. In 2018, Mike Lents represented Team USA flying a Panzl S-330 at the World Advanced Aerobatic Championships in Strejnic, Romania. Mike placed 5th in the World, leading the Team in points to a second place finish. In 2023, Mike, again, competed for Team USA in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Known for his involvement with the UND Aerocast and specializing in flying the American Champion Aircraft Super Decathlon with over 2,500 hours in type, he continues to teach students the art of all-attitude flight.
This aircraft is one of 2 UND Super Decathlons used for Aerobatic Training and Spin Flights. It is active on the flight line with students regularly flying this specific machine with Mike Lents and other seasoned UND instructors. It is rated to +6 and -5 Gz and 200 mph.
