Science, Technology & the Future | Mike Johnson - Testable Theories of Consciousness @scfu | Uploaded March 2019 | Updated October 2024, 9 hours ago.
Michael Edward Johnson will discuss the up-coming battle of two titans of testable consciousness theories (IIT & GWT), as well as Mike’s views on formalizing consciousness, seeking to zero in on types of physical systems which are conscious, which addresses some of the most fascinating problems in history: What is it that underlies our everyday experience? How do we measure it? Once we have formalized it, what do we do with it?
- What is the project attempting to achieve and why is it interesting?
- How will the different goals of different theories of consciousness effect experimental design?
- What should theories of consc aim to achieve? (an understanding of the phenomenology or the dynamics of relevant info processing?)
- What do we do once consciousness has been solved? What do we do with that knowledge?
"Whether or not this project, funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation, narrows the options for how consciousness arises, it hopes to establish a new way to do science for difficult, contentious problems. Instead of each camp championing its own view and demolishing others, researchers will collaborate and agree to publish in advance how discriminating experiments might be conducted — and then respect the outcomes." - 'Neuroscience Readies for a Showdown Over Consciousness Ideas': quantamagazine.org/neuroscience-readies-for-a-showdown-over-consciousness-ideas-20190306
