Green Fingers. Philippa and her mother are coming to visit, and they've brought a tiger lily as a gift. How will Angelo's way of looking after it compare with the president of the local horticultural society? This episode was originally broadcast on Thursday, 6th April, 1989, and it seems that there's a bit of an environmental theme bubbling under early on in the show's history. Angelo talks to a plant in the first couple of episodes, then there's his refusal to eat meat in the third, and now in the fourth we've got him entertaining Casper to an extreme degree. It's something that passed me by at the time, and maybe I'm looking too deeply, but I'll be interested to see if it continues throughout the series.
Top marks to Alessia Gwyther once again for making Philippa so fundamentally irritating, annoyingly wrapped up in her own little world, with the uncanny ability to always just _be there_ when you least want her and won't easily be shaken off. Still, now we know where the character gets it from: mother Penelope is played by Elizabeth Bennett, who you may recognise from Heartbeat, or Home to Roost, or any number of things going back to 1969 on her IMDB. I think this was her one and only Mike and Angelo appearance, though. I was going to say her interactions with Angelo gave me slight vibes of Edward Scissorhands, but this predates that.
Overall, a very good episode as the show starts to find its feet, and it's always good to see a posh adult character make a bit of an idiot of themselves. At this point, simply being caught was enough of a punchline, and I think it's fair to say that in later years that would have been developed further into embarrassed cover-ups and full-on farce. Here, it's all a bit more gentle, which I don't mind at all. Sometimes these early series feel like a completely different show to me, while simultaneously being unmistakably Mike and Angelo. Not sure how that works, but it's true.
Just to wrap up on the admin side of things, I've had to cut out a funny scene in the kitchen where Angelo shows off the shopping he's done for Rita, complete with misunderstandings including not being able to find a tube of toothpaste, so he just bought a tuba instead (which is why he later has one on hand with which to serenade Casper). Otherwise, I've done my best to keep everything necessary for the plot, even though that unfortunately involves dodgy cropping and a handful of edits that don't make perfect sense. Everything's uncut and as originally broadcast after the 4:43 mark.
Stay tuned at the end for a brief glimpse of Timmy Mallett and Carol Vorderman joining Jerry Foulkes and Scally for the CITV continuity, apparently promoting Go Getters three months ahead of its summer premiere.
