If you are on Windows and your monitor resolution is not supported, or you wish to free up screen real-estate, here’s what you can do.
Microsoft PowerToys was first released in 1996 for Windows 95 power users. You can download the latest version on GitHub.
Once installed, here’s the plan. On my 3440 pixel wide monitor I wish to use 2560 x 1440 resolution instead.
Next we open Taskbar Settings, and we want to toggle on Automatically Hide Taskbar.
In PowerToys, there’s a utility called FancyZones. This is what makes the transition between window sizes easy.
We create a new layout. 2560 x 1440. Click Save. And we open the Edit menu. We don’t want any space around the zones. Now back in Edit mode let’s select one of the splitters.
Press Tab to toggle between the zones and with the Delete key, remove the unused one.
Now we simply drag the splitter until the zone matches our resolution 2560x1440.
Remember to select the newly created layout.
Okay let’s open DaVinci Resolve. And we’ll do something which normally we would avoid: Resize the window.
Now when we drag any window and hold the Shift key down, the zones will appear. Simply let go – and we’re done!
As you can see we can switch between Menus, so everything should be working fine now. And now this free space can be used for example to show your reference stills. Or open your scopes so that you can see all of them at once.
Adjusting the DaVinci Resolve window to work with MIDIGrade like this is not a gimmick. I’ve been using a setup similar to this for quite a while now, making two monitors work where previously I needed three. Now I’ve got the GUI, my scopes, and clean feed, all with just two monitors.
