The most noteworthy cottonwood growth along the so-called Loneliest Road in America, U.S. 50 in Northern Nevada, was a tree covered with shoes in unincorporated Middlegate. Passersby routinely flung their worn out footwear onto the branches above but that activity came to an abrupt end in December 2010, when one or more unknown assailants chopped down the tree.
