Theme: Choose your own adventure! The only required prompts are the 2 main character prompts - for the rest, choose as many as you want from each category. The prompts are based on settings, tropes, character types, etc. that you might find in a middle grade novel.
*As always, your hosts encourage you to read diversely even for prompts that don’t specifically require it.*
Prompts:
Main Character: REQUIRED
-Read a book with a main character who's different from you
-Read a book with a main character who shares something with you
Companion:
Friend: Read a book recommended by a friend
Sibling / Cousin / etc.: Read a book with themes of family
Animal Companion: Read a book with an animal on cover / title / etc. OR a book chosen by a pet / one you think they'd like
...Enemy? Let's hope they're a friend later! Read a book you're unsure about.
Mentor: It's so important for young readers (and older readers!) to see stories that reflect things they deal with: Read a book dealing with an important issue.
Genre: Choose your genre (or more than one!) depending on which you choose for a prompt
-Read a book in your favorite genre
-Read a book from a genre you normally don't read in MG (nonfiction, sci-fi, etc.)
-Read a book from a genre you always mean to read more of
Settings:
Home: Read an author you love.
Castle: Castles, unfortunately, often come with dungeons: Read a book with dark or serious elements (tone, cover, etc.)
School: Learning is lifelong: Read a book that makes you curious or interested.
Forest: A forest can be quiet and even lonely: Read a book you haven't heard much about or that doesn't have many reviews.
The cool kid's house: Read a hyped book.
Community center: Read a book about community support, found family, people coming together, etc.
A book: A book itself can be a setting!: Read a cozy or comforting book.
The witch's cottage, who's actually a lovely person, thank you very much: Read a book that breaks the "rules" (AKA stereotypes) of Middle Grade.
Plot:
Internal conflict: Read a book you've been putting off
External conflict: Read a book with a cover you love (EXTERNAL part of the book ;))
You're the Chosen One: Pick up any book you want!
You're NOT the Chosen One, you're just an ordinary person doing what has to be done: Finish one of your currently reading books or one you need to for another project / readathon (this one doesn't have to be MG)
Whoops, turns out you have magic powers: Read a book with a trope you love.
Self-acceptance: Read a book you think you'll love.
Something weird is going on, and you've got to find out what it is: Read a book with a mystery element OR pick a book randomly from your TBR (can be a specific shelf, stack, full TBR, social media poll, etc.)
