Microsoft 365 Director Jeremy Chapman walks through the essentials of Excel — the interface, core concepts, and how to work with data — using Excel on the web. He starts from a blank workbook, defines the building blocks (cells, columns, rows, ranges, and sheets), and shows how the ribbon groups controls for fonts, alignment, and number formatting. From there he builds a monthly expense tracker: merging and centering a title, adding fills and contrasting font colors, and formatting cells as currency.
To fill the sheet fast, he prompts Copilot in Excel to generate a year of personal finance data with months as columns and expense categories as rows. He then shows how to work with the numbers — using AutoSum to total a column, dragging formulas so column references update automatically, and adding an AVERAGE. You'll also see how to clear contents versus delete cells, columns, and rows.
Copilot then writes the total formulas, reformats cells, and applies conditional formatting from a prompt to highlight high and low numbers. Asked which months have the highest expenses and why, Copilot reasons over the data — flagging December for holiday spending and July for summer utilities. Finally, sharing the workbook stores it in OneDrive so teammates can edit at the same time, with every change synced in real time. Copilot Chat is included at no extra cost with eligible Microsoft 365 work, school, and personal plans.
