'Riley's Waves' is a short piece for Alto Flute and Harp. It is structured in three sections, each with a different character. The first is bright and animated; the second stiller, more reflective and the third; darker, sombre. All the music in the piece is derived from short cells of material which are repeated and subtly varied throughout the course of each section. I watched a documentary recently on the BBC to celebrate the 90th Birthday of the renowned artist, Bridget Riley. One part of the interview takes place on a beach in Cornwall. She observed that the waves hitting the shoreline look to the casual observer that they are all the same when in fact upon closer inspection each wave is individual. This observation serves as an apt metaphor for my treatment of musical material in this piece.
