Michael Strevens is a philosopher of science at New York University, primarily working on complex systems, scientific explanation, the social structure of science and philosophical applications of cognitive science. Outside of academia, he is best known for his book 'The Knowledge Machine' in which he explains why science is so successful at creating knowledge and why it took so long for humans to figure out how to do it right. In this episode, we discuss the 'great method debate', which started with Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn and is ongoing today, the iron rule of explanation in science, the ontological status of the Subject, AI and Slavoj Žižek.

How do we account for this paradox that the absence of Law universalizes Prohibition? There is only one possible explanation: enjoyment itself, which we experience as transgression, is in its innermost status something imposed, ordered - when we enjoy, we never do it spontaneously, we always follow a certain injunction. The psychoanalytic name for this obscene injunction, for this obscene call. Enjoy!, is superego. (For They Know Not What They Do: Enjoyment as a Political Factor) Although jouissance can be translated as “enjoyment,” translators of Lacan often leave it in French in order to render palpable its excessive, properly traumatic character: we are not dealing with simple pleasures, but with a violent intrusion that brings more pain than pleasure. This is how we usually perceive the Freudian superego, the cruel and sadistic ethical agency which bombards us with impossible demands and then gleefully observes our failure to meet them. No wonder, then, that Lacan posited an equation between jouissance and superego: to enjoy is not a matter of following one’s spontaneous tendencies; it is rather something we do as a kind of weird and twisted ethical duty.
