Miao Xiaochun used the painting Hieronymus Bosch´s The Garden of Earthly Delights (circa. 1503) as a basis for his 3D computer animation "Microcosm":
He describes the process as following:
"What Bosch created was based on the allegories of his time.... I may not understand them all.... But I have to create with my own language and to swap all the contents for modern things and make it a modern story. This can reflect my view and feeling in our times.... His works are my starting points where I used his structure, such as his structure of heaven, earth and hell and the basic form of his pictures. But I only use these forms and changed all the contents, including figures, backgrounds and all facilities. What I create belongs to our times.... are the dreams of modern people. They reflect the views of modern people on life and death, their desires, and their views on human´s weakness."
Miao Xiaochun was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. In 1989, Xiaochun graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing (CAFA), where he currently teaches. He works in a variety of media ranging from photography to digital art. Since 2005, he has been predominantly working with 3D animation, often referencing art history combined with topics such as past and present, East and West, humans and machines, and more. Xiaochun considers the contrast between what we see as ancient and modern in relationship with the length of history of humanity. His work seeks to build a bridge between East and West and between past and present, using animation to create an alternate vision.
