The UK has some unusual city names, perhaps the most notorious of all being "Worcestershire". Learn how to pronounce it and many more UK town names in this short pronunciation lesson. In this video you are going to learn how to pronounce some of the harder-to-pronounce places in the U.K. So, useful if you're planning a trip here, or if you're doing an IELTS speaking test and would like to refer to places in the U.K. Let's have a look at some guidelines, and then a little bit later we're going to look at some of the places that don't quite fit the rules.So, with a place ending with: "borough" or "burgh", you would expect it to sound: "borough" or "burgh", but that's not what happens. It's normally shortened to something like: "bra". For example: "Edinburgh", "Edinbra", "Edinbra", "Edinbra", got it? Okay? Not: "Edinborough", okay?Second one, with a place ending in "cester", you shorten it to "sta". For example, it's not: "Bicester", it's: "Bicesta", "Bicesta". There is an exception, here, with: "Cirencester", which is a lovely place out in the west of England. "Cirencester", not "Cirensta". Okay? "Cirencester", that's an exception, there.Next, on to counties. So, a county where... The U.K. is divided up into different region called counties. Lots of these end with "shire", the shire, the countryside, but we pronounce it actually: "shur". For example: "Devonshire", "Devonsha", not: "Devonshire".This one is particularly tricky to pronounce: "Worcestershire", "Wosteshur". So, basically what we're doing is we're going: "Wost", and then we're abbreviating that: "Woste", "Wosteshur", and then we're putting a "u" in here. "Worcestershire". You still with me? Good stuff, keep the concentration.Now, "wich" often goes to "ich", so we're just going to be taking out that "w" there. "Wich" goes to "ich". "Norwich", "Norich", it's not: "Nor-wich", okay? "Norich". It's a lovely place in the east of England, beautiful cathedral, and my uncle is an estate agent, so go and say: "Hi."On to places ending in "mouth". Obviously going to be places by the sea. For example... Can you spot my little mistake, here? Shouldn't be an "f", it should be a "th". A subtle difference, but important to get right. So it's: "Teignmuth" not "Teignmouth". Okay? "Teignmuth", it's a shorter vowel sound; we're not doing the sort of the "o", it's a "Teignmuth". So that's down in Devon, very scenic place in the southwest of the U.K."Ham" goes to "um". For example, it's not: "Durham", it's: "Duram", so you're effectively losing that "h". "Durham", beautiful place in the northeast of England, very strong university in Durham. Right."Wick" goes to "ick". For example, if I put the whole spelling of: "Berwick-upon Tweed", you can see that we are missing this "w" out, so it becomes: "Berick-upon Tweed". Nice coastal town, again, near the border with Scotland in the northeast of the U.K. Okay? Let's have a look at a few more anomalies and some exceptions to the rules.I'm also going to be pointing out, with these exceptions, some excellent places to visit in the U.K. There's so many different exceptions, but the places listed here are worth checking out if you're coming to the U.K."Tor", you would expect it to say: "quay", something like that, but it's actually: "Torkey", "Torkey", and the same would apply for "Newquay".This place in Norfolk, you might expect it to be: "Hunstanton", but actually you miss out the "tan" and it becomes: "Hunston".This is a place I went on honeymoon down in Cornwall. What do you think it says? "Mousehole"? It's not, it's: "Mousol", a lovely fishing village down in Cornwall.Again in Cornwall, what do you think: "Fowey"? "Foey", okay? Maybe it's helpful to think of there being no "w".

If you are hosting people for dinner, if you are corporate entertaining,it's very important that we take care of our clients or guests and, you know, the more awarewe are and the more familiar we are with this vocabulary, the better. If this is not directlyrelevant to you, consider this as a listening comprehension practice with the quiz at the endto check how well your understanding has been, how good your understanding has been.Okay, so lots of people have different diets. Some of these will be caused by allergies,so people could have... So, an allergy is where if you consume this product,then you will have some physical reaction in your body to that being in your body, in yourbloodstream. So, some people are allergic to cow's milk or eggs or nuts or shellfish, fish with,you know, hard shell, wheat, soy, or fish. Now, you could say, "I'm allergic to","allergic", "I'm allergic to", or, "I have a something allergy", adjective, noun."I have a nut allergy", for example. "I have a shellfish allergy", okay?Now, "gluten intolerant" means that either for health choices or you just feel that your bodyresponds better when you don't have gluten, which is basically anything that has grain in.So, examples of grains are here. Wheat, rye, barley, oats, yeah, kind of long crop-like productsare not enjoyed by people who are gluten intolerant. So, if someone is tolerant,it means they are welcoming and accepting. With the prefix "in",it's reversed. It means gluten is not welcomed by this person.Other people might be vegetarian, not able to eat meat, or vegan, not able to have meat or dairyproducts, or a celiac. Now, a celiac is an autoimmune disease where if any gluten productscome into contact with any of the food they eat, then there is quite a serious reactionin that person. So, there's no choice here with celiacs. They can't have anything with gluten in,whereas some people just choose to because they think it's healthier. Also, some people may notbe able to have certain products for religious reasons. So, Jewish people tend to favor a kosherdiet, which means that some meat they are not allowed to have, and other meat has to be preparedin a certain way, and there are some other guidelines. It comes from the Old Testament,from Leviticus. Halal is the Islamic equivalent, and again, a lot of it is to do with the preparationand the slaughter of animals, but there is some crossover between these two.But if you're going to be offering meat to a Jewish or Muslim person, then you need to bequite careful of the way the meat has been prepared and where the meat has been sourced,as in where it's been obtained from. Right. Explaining your diet. So, if youare in a situation, say you go on holiday to England and you need to explain what kind offoods you can have and what kind of food you can't have, then this is for you. They put thought into each one, and each one you kind of look forward to getting. Maybe they choose their emojis very carefully, maybe they choose their... Just what they write and it hits the right note. Well, that's because they've spent time thinking about how they write. And what I'm going to be doing today is sharing some ideas with you about how you can start nurturing your own writing. Sound good? Cool. Let's carry on. In case you don't know me, my name's Benjamin. I'm one of the teachers from engVid. Okay, so if you really want to get good at something, you need to practice. Yep, I've said that before. So, if you want to get good at writing, the main thing you're going to need to do is set aside some daily time for writing. Now, according to your sort of commitments and schedule, you will know when the best time is. Maybe you're more productive in the morning, maybe there are less distractions late at night. One famous writer, Burleigh Doherty, used to put her children to bed and then put a fire... Put a log on the fire, and she would write until the log had burnt all the way down. So, that was her daily practice. It was in the evening when there were no distractions. And in today's age, there are a lot of distractions. Our phone is a constant source of distraction, messaging us, and there's always something to look at and do on your phone. Well, if you're going to develop your writing practice, you're going to need to put your phone down at times to concentrate on it. So, find a time that works for you and stick to it. Like, I've tried this before, okay, and it's not easy because you always have a million things that you need to do that will always be an urgent to-do list. But that's not going away, yeah? That will be with us until the day we die. There's always going to be things to do. What you need to do is be able to prioritize and switch off some of those needs and demands on our time so that you make the time for your writing. "Why would you bother doing that?" I hear you ask. Well, I'm not guaranteeing that you're going to be like J.K. Rowling with Harry Potter and be a blockbuster bestseller, okay? There are no guarantees that anything will get published. You have to want to develop your writing because you want to do it, yeah, for the simple pleasure of being able to communicate articulately, concisely exactly what you want to be able to write, let alone requirements for good use of English at work and at exam level. So, there's two types of writing, really. There's reflection, sort of diary writing, and creative writing, and I'm going to look at both. So, I was reading a quote earlier today by... Who was it? Oscar Wilde, that was it. And he said, "I always take my diary on a train with me because if I get bored..." I'm paraphrasing now. "If I get bored, I want to have something sensational to read about." So, a diary can provide a record that will last a long, long, long, long time. Yep. You might find that your children read your diary in many years down the line. And the process of writing a diary, so at the end of the day, writing down what's happened, and your thoughts, and anything else you want to put in there can be therapeutic. Yep. You're getting stuff off your chest. Yep. Any kind of worries and things, you can write down, and by writing them down, it seems to lessen that stress. You might find that you sleep better. So, it's not actually that good for us to be looking at blue screens before we go to sleep, but if you can get into the habit of writing a diary, it's not always practical. You might find that you sleep better. […]
