Normally you have to exfiltrate from the mission area for capture cages to work. However, starting a mission also works as I've found out. Combined with the properties of instant mission starts, it makes for some fast animal collection.

Really just useful for 100%, but a quick way to get some uncommon, rare and a super rare animal. It looks like captures at Spugmay were useless, but you won't always get a Deathstalker or Leopard Gecko from the others, so this gives an extra chance at that. I just got lucky this run. Also you could grab the Oriental Stork during Cloaked in Silence and run out of the hotzone, but I decided against that because normally you would already get that during your initial story playthrough.

The fast travel thing is pretty neat in general. Also sometimes the animals menu breaks. If there's any cutscenes between the 1st and 2nd popup of the animal screen, those cutscenes are unskippable. This glitch seems to happen consistently if you catch animals during the Sally fight and then beat it, meaning you can't skip the credits.
This was done on version 1.02 of the game, I cannot guarantee this works on more recent versions.
