Chinese automaker SAIC, the parent company of MG, has just announced something bold: the MG4 will become the first mass-produced electric vehicle in the world to launch globally with semi-solid state batteries. Let’s pause on that for a second. This isn’t a prototype hidden in a lab, this isn’t a press release about something coming five years from now—these cars are cleared for sale in China, and they’re coming to Europe and other markets very soon.

Now, what exactly makes this newsworthy? Let’s break it down.

The MG4 has already been a headline car for MG, especially because of its affordability and practicality. But until now, its battery options have relied mostly on the familiar lithium iron phosphate chemistry, or LFP. That’s the same type of battery you’ll find in many Teslas and BYD models today. LFP packs are durable, affordable, and reliable, but they’re not particularly energy dense. In other words, you often need a bigger, heavier pack to get the same driving range you’d get from other chemistries.

Topics covered in this video:

1. World’s first mass produced EV with semi-solid state batteries.

2. MG4 electric car semi-solid state battery technology explained.

3. Advantages of semi-solid state batteries over LFP batteries.

4. SAIC MG4 electric vehicle price and global launch details.

5. How semi-solid state batteries improve EV charging speed.

6. Future of solid-state batteries versus semi-solid state technology.

7. Chinese automakers leading in next generation EV batteries.

This new announcement changes the conversation. The MG4 will now be available with manganese-based lithium-ion batteries using semi-solid state chemistry—developed by QingTao Energy, one of China’s rising players in the battery industry.
