I found that the tourist zone of Playa del Carmen has changed in recent years. The prices have been inflated, and the vendors are more aggressive. They will use all kinds of tactics to lure you into their shops to then sell you goods at prices that are multiple times higher than you would pay outside of this area. Nonetheless, you can still have a good time, just beware of scams and don't get ripped off!
