In this video, I share how ancient Mayan instruments inspired my friend Ruby to create something modern and beautiful from nature.
The strange fruit shell called āoreja de elefanteā resembles an ear according to a local man who shared some of the Mayan history with me. I learned that in many Indigenous and rural traditions across Mexico, objects from nature were named poetically firstā¦and scientifically later. The name āorejaā may never make it into a botanical book found in your local library.
Additionally, the Mayan people were known for transforming natural materials and resources like this into useful and artistic creations - including bowls, rattles, and musical instruments. Nature wasnāt just sceneryā¦it was supply, culture, and rhythm.
