I played the Metro 2039 demo at Gamescom. It mixes tense surface exploration with classic Metro tunnel survival: radiation management, gas mask filters, crafting, stealth, and brutal close-quarters combat.

Metro 2039 is the next mainline entry in the Metro series from 4A Games. The year is 2039. After 25 years of conflict in the tunnels beneath irradiated Moscow, the Metro has been united under a fanatical Spartan leader known as Hunter and his authoritarian regime, the Novoreich.

You play as The Stranger, a fully voiced new protagonist forced out of exile and back into the one place he swore never to return — the Metro.

Leaving the safety of a Metro shelter and heading onto the ruined streets of Moscow
A mission to take out a raider-held military base
Digital watch / filter timer and diegetic survival UI
Crafting ammo and gas mask filters from metal and chemicals
Weapon customization, including the silenced Shatun rifle and the Duplet shotgun
No-crosshair gunplay with iron sights and crafted optics
Encounters with raiders, mutants, and returning threats like Nosalis
Optional exploration, UV-light clues, puzzles, and high-tension stealth
The game blends the claustrophobic feel of Metro 2033 / Last Light with some of Exodus’ more open side paths. Combat, stealth, and resource pressure all sit at the center of the experience.
