META SETTLEMENT
There's been a big court case going on in the tech world, between a group of US states and Meta. But the trial has been cut short because of something called a settlement. Yeah, it's a big deal. A bunch of US states decided to sue Meta, alleging it deliberately designed Facebook and Instagram to be addictive for kids. The trial was expected to last about six weeks, with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg set to take the stand. But, less than two weeks in it's all suddenly ended, because of something called a "settlement". That's a legal agreement made outside of court to resolve things in a legal case, settling often costs less than going to court, resolves things more quickly, and means parties avoid the stress and publicity of a trial. Settlements also often involve money. For Meta, that meant agreeing to pay 25 billion dollars towards youth mental health across the US. Settling also doesn't mean Meta has admitted to doing anything wrong. It's also not just about money. As part of it, Meta has agreed to make some big changes to how Facebook and Instagram work, saying it will add stronger child safety features, like 2-hour daily time limits, hiding like counts, and some beauty filters, and limiting push notifications. So, we'll just have to wait and see if this case really did change social media forever.
NEPAL FLOODS
Major flash flooding has devastated parts of Nepal and Tibet. The Red Cross says entire villages and markets have been wiped out. At least 160 people have died, and hundreds are missing, including 34 Australians. A major rescue operation is underway, and the United Nations has said it's sending supplies and workers to help.
YOUNG AUTHORS
This week is Book Week, and now we're going to meet some students who have been given the task of writing a book in a week. These students are all from the Torres Strait Islands, which is a group of more than 200 islands located between Australia and Papua New Guinea and they've been flown to Sydney as part of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation's Create Program. This story also includes some words in Torres Strait Creole, which is a mix of English, traditional Indigenous languages, and Pacific Pidgin, and they want to give young Torres Strait Islander kids a story that reflects them.
LA TOMATINA
First up to Spain's La Tomatina festival. Thousands of people have travelled far and wide to get absolutely covered in tomatoes. Organisers reckon 22-thousand people turned out, and that 150-thousand kilograms of tomatoes were tossed. The Tomatina festival is thought to have its origins in a village food fight that happened here back in 1945.
VIDEO GAME FAIR
Now to the biggest video game fair in the world! This is Gamescom in Germany, where all the latest video game releases are on display. There is also no shortage of people in cosplay, and elaborate installations. This year, there are more than 1,700 exhibits.
