In this conversation, I discuss with Dr. Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes, a philosopher of mind and metaphysics who specialises in the thought of Whitehead, Nietzsche, and Spinoza, as well as fields pertaining to panpsychism and altered states of consciousness. He is a research fellow and lecturer at The University of Exeter. Throughout our discourse, we focus on his latest publication, "On the need for metaphysics in psychedelic therapy and research," which introduces the critical idea that the "integrative phase" of psychedelic research, needs to be complimented with training in philosophy, and specifically the field of metaphysics, in order to help mediate the psychedelic experience. In this methodological move, Dr. Sjöstedt-Hughes seeks to identify a missing piece of the therapeutic process, in the context of psychedelic psychotherapy, because conventional psychotherapists, have no way to address the metaphysical concerns that inevitably arise post-psychedelic experience.
