How does a caterpillar completely dissolve itself and reassemble into a flying butterfly? Using the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly, this talk explores the astonishing biology of metamorphosis—from silk pad attachment and chrysalis formation to apoptosis, autophagy, and the rebuilding of wings from imaginal discs. Inside the chrysalis, most of the caterpillar’s body breaks down into cellular “soup” before reorganizing into a fully functional butterfly, complete with a precision-engineered proboscis that locks together like microscopic latches.
