Metal Slug is the first installment in the bestselling sidescrolling shoot'em up series, debuting in 1996 on arcade machines. Due to its enduring popularity, the game not only launched a renowned series but also made its way into various compilations; as a result, its extensive list of supported platforms includes PS4, PC, and more.
Plot
Metal Slug takes place in 2028, when the sinister General Morden prepares to conquer the world. Not only has he amassed a sizable army, but he has recently acquired the futuristic tank, the titular Metal Slug. The task of stopping Morden from carrying out his evil plan falls to Captain Marco Rossi and Colonel Tarmy Roving of the Peregrine Falcon Strike Force. The protagonists must locate Morden's base and raze it to the ground, as well as destroy all Metal Slugs they encounter.
Mechanics
If you choose to play solo, before starting Metal Slug, released on PS4, PC, etc., you choose one of two playable characters. Then, you embark on a frantic journey through six diverse levels – including forests, city streets, snow-covered valleys, and military bases.
The gameplay is observed from the sidelines, and involves constantly moving right and eliminating everything in your path. Although your primary weapons are a pistol, knife, and grenades, you acquire additional weapons throughout the game – by eliminating enemy soldiers, destroying crates or boxes, and freeing hostages along the way, you collect murder weapons with significantly greater destructive power. This also provides you with food that replenishes your life energy and various bonuses.
The gameplay is enriched not only by moments where we pilot powerful vehicles equipped with impressive firepower and durable armor, but also by boss fights awaiting us at the end of each level. It's worth noting that the overall difficulty level is relatively high – there's constant action on the screen, and enemies appear at an incredible pace, attacking from all sides of the screen; this requires considerable dexterity and, at times, patience.
Game Modes
On select platforms, Metal Slug can be played solo or with a second player in the cooperative multiplayer mode.
Technical Issues
Metal Slug's pixel-art graphics are appealing primarily for their light, cartoonish style. The whole thing is sprinkled with a solid dose of humor – enemies can be caught sunbathing or preparing meals; they often try to flee when they spot you.
