The Genome Soldiers in Metal Gear Solid must win the award for least intelligent video game characters, at least on the Playstation. This was brought to my attention recently when I began to play the game again for the first time in five years.
Now, I don't profess to be any good at it, quite the contrary, in fact, and even with my rusty marksmanship and weak muscle memory I still managed to outwit the guards on more than one occasion. Mind you, I WAS using stealth camouflage most of the time.
I originally had a commentary lined up for this but decided not to include it and the let the cinematic and atmospheric nature of the game speak for itself.
Gameplay is on the easy level to accentuate the stupidity of the guards.
For the geeks: Recorded from a PS1 onto VHS, ripped to DVD then edited using computer software. Exported in AVI.

Finally, a benefit of living in Greater Manchester! Five quid for an any bus day pass to anywhere in the metropolitan county aint too bad, especially when the UKs largest retro gaming Expo just so happens to be taking place up Salford way.
Although the huge collection of retro television sets is something of a nostalgia trip, scanlines dont necessarily make for decent camshot footage. Never mind, its the consoles youre here for, eh?

Oh, hi mobsters! Nice of you to be so considerate as to wait five seconds before opening fire because I left my light gun at home.
A rather simple game once you figure out the above. This issue was remedied and then some in the sequel, aptly named Boss of Chicago 2, which is almost impossible to complete on your own. I havent yet found anyone stupid enough to play it with me, and I dont think I will bother trying any more.
Try it if you like, but Prohibition (Infogrames, 1987) looks better. I might give that a whirl soon.")

Though this game is entirely in French, thanks to my GCSE in Foreign Languages I was able to draft the following translation of the description on the back of its cassette case:
Jimmy is a 17-year-old motor racing fan who just passed his license test (by one mark, and only because the examiner was his uncle). His rich parents have bought him an ex-rental Renault Formula One car, which he must now use to eliminate all those annoying neighbours who constantly nag him to stop playing his Arctic Monkeys records so loud. I think exploding them into a pool of flesh and blood is apt revenge for their conservative points of view, dont you?
Well, erm, I cant really follow that.")

Did you know that Pele endorsed a football game released to rival US Golds World Cup USA 94? Well, neither did I until I found this game.
I really didnt know that the penalties option meant all fouls - I assumed that it referred to having penalties to decide a drawn match. I only found that out AFTER Id done the bulk of the video, and had to tag on that bit in the middle about the instruction manual.")

Goes on ten minutes too long considering I only demo half the game, but what the heck.
Of all the subjects you could make a text adventure about, cricket is probably the least likely. Thankfully, this game has little to do with the sport, instead focusing on the continuing adventures of the England cricket team circa 1988.
Action centres around events described in Ian Ram Bothams autobiography Guano and Gower. Youll have to watch the video to find out what happens, because the book was pulled by the ECB after only 300 copies were printed. Apparently they dont like players blabbing about top secret operations in Natangaville, Kerguezeland.
The verdict? Favourable, as it happens. Its not too difficult to find your way around, and a very British sense of humour is prevalent to brighten the most boring of situations. Plus theres a walkthrough available on the internet just in case you get confused in all the guano-pilfering action.
I wonder what we had to pick up those tea bags for? Considering why we eventually needed the cigarettes, Id suggest they may be to feed a hungry shark with a taste for Earl Grey.")

Hey, remember that virtual reality thing from season 2 of GamesMaster? Enthusiast Simon Marston has bought and restored not one, but TWO of them! The one in this video was donated to the Retro Computer Museum for the benefit of lucky expo visitors.
In this video, Simon gives us a brief rundown of the game while other people laugh at how silly their mates look in the pods.
Also, note that the machine cost 35 grand new! Wow.
