Title: Dead Calm
Song: Dauðalogn
Artist: Sigur Rós
Warnings: spoilers up to 5x13
Category: character study
Characters/Pairings: Arthur Pendragon
Summary: Long live the King.
So I'm really fond of this character, not only of "Merlin's" Arthur, but the legends' Arthur as well, so I felt like it was a perfect opportunity to analyze and brainstorm and all. I swear I could have written a few pages long analysis of the video and how it all makes sense in my head but I'm pretty sure it'd be pretty boring? So. Yeah. Just a couple of basic ideas: I wanted to explore his journey to becoming King, and I liked to play with parallels of becoming king and dying which in Arthur's case was kind of the same thing, judging by the result er... Anyway! I really love the show's cinematography: panoramic shots of the nature and woods and mountains, battle scenes with the slow-motion sequences (wicked cool!), close ups, of course, and many more. So, when I heard the song - which was actually when I watched The Vampire Diaries season finale - I wanted to make a vid for it, plus, hello? It's Sigur Ros! Last week I thought like, hey, the translation of the lyrics is pretty amazing and I wanted to make an Arthur video. I thought all the cinematographic shots I mentioned would be perfect for such a song.
I may be a bit good at languages but I'm in no way any good at Icelandic so I had to use my google-fu and find the English translation of it. So, if there's any mistakes please forgive me - I did in fact base some of the scenes on the lines in the lyrics, but I think the video could be easily watched and understood even without the understanding of the words - they just add a bonus of some sorts :)
Sorry I got carried away and then couldn't bring myself to cut the song! /o\
Hope you like it! Have a great weekend!
Here's the Icelandic lyrics:
Heimur hljóðlátur
Hreyfist ei hár láð í
Hljómar grafarþögn
Enginn vaknaður
Enginn taktur hraður
Algert dauðalogn
Enn á eðal tél
Lýðar gætúr birta von
Gegnum mér sjá logn
Allt toginá alða
Enn á eðal tél
Lýðar gætúr birta von
Gegnum sjá logum mér
Nú signu vast að unðum til von
Morguni vætur
Allt sítt logngára stað
Og múkk árast í
Og múkk brjótum í dauðalogn
And here's the translation I referred to:
The world silent
No movement in the high land
Sounds like the silence of a grave
There is none awake
There is no rapid tempo
Total dead calm
Yet the noble believe
People may show hope
I see through the calm
All towing on the centuries
Yet the noble believe
People may show hope
Through the flames I see
Now a dark boat wonder into the hope
The morning rain
All its calm ripples in place
And the seagull attacks in
