The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was developed entirely in house. And by ‘in house’, Mercedes means the tuning firm AMG, which became an official Mercedes department in 1990. This was the first time AMG had been given a clean sheet to build a road car from the ground up, and one with the billing that it would be something altogether more serious than the familiar ‘big-engine-and-comfortable-Mercedes’ AMG recipe.
The talk this time was of an all-out supercar. Upon its introduction, the SLS AMG's 571 PS (420 kW, 563 HP) M159 engine was according to AMG "the world's most powerful naturally aspirated production series engine" ever produced. In fact, the 6.2 litre engine (the engine was based on the M156 block used in the rest of Mercedes 63 range) was modified to such an extent that AMG gave it a separate engine code of M159 to signify the more than 120 different parts used in the SLS engine as well as the addition of a dry-sump lubrication system to handle the car's high cornering speeds and racing capabilities.
