This is my marimba duet arrangement of Mephisto by Queen Bee, the first ending theme for Oshi no Ko.

It's FINALLY time for my first anime cover on the channel! I thought about watching Oshi no Ko for months but never got around to it, then proceeded to binge the first two seasons in three days in time for season 3 to start lmao. I watch subs so sadly the season has already ended (I thought it was gonna be 13 episodes so 11 being the finale shook me for a minute lol), but hey dub fans you're in for a treat (and in my opinion a whole season of Oshi no PEAK).
This theme had been stuck in my head ever since I caught up on the anime and I had a vague idea for what essentially became a "Mephisto but it's slow and emotional" style cover, so I sat down at MuseScore and started experimenting with different tempos and ideas. Originally I transcribed the full version of the theme, but with the slower tempo it came out to over 7 minutes long and that felt like way too long for what I wanted this cover to be. The hardest part of this was deciding what to cut. Eventually I settled on cutting out the second verse/chorus and going straight to an abridged version of the guitar solo before going to the last chorus and outro. I decided to use the TV size version's ending instead of the full version's ending too.
This started as a piano solo, but I decided to change it to a marimba duet and I'm really glad I did because it makes full use of the 5.0-octave range and sounds magical with a little extra ambient tail reverb. This also got me to work on my 4-mallet skills for a good bit, which I needed because I hadn't played this much 4 mallets in a while. I was honestly worried about a couple sections in the Marimba 1 part, so I was pleasantly surprised when I was able to work up both parts and record audio/video for this duet in one afternoon/evening sitting. I was very purposeful about my mallet choices for this, specifically with Marimba 1 using slightly harder mallets for the melody than the harmony when it played both at the same time, so I've listed what mallets I used further down in this video description. (I'm not sponsored though, I'm just listing them there so you can see what I used!)
I'd planned on wearing hoodies for the video since Aqua wears the hoodie in the ED, but it was way too hot in the studio and the sleeves were getting in my way so I last minute changed to a pink t shirt for Ruby and a blue t shirt for Aqua. Ruby's energy totally vibes with Kirby eating a bunch of food though, plus I could totally see Aqua wearing a knockoff Wailmer Walmart shirt. I made the visualizer in the background match their pink/blue color schemes too. In terms of the video, I know this is different from my usual style of fade ins and quick cuts with video guides, but I wanted the focus to be on the duet itself and wanted to make sure you could see the mallets at all times (they usually get cut off top/bottom with the video guides cause there's only so many ways to fit the 5.0-octave range on screen).
I'm already thinking about potential themes from the new anime season to cover next. I just finished catching up on Classroom of the Elite and Re:Zero so naturally those two stand out to me as options, but let me know what anime you're watching this season in the comments below and be sure to mention any OPs/EDs you think I should cover next!
