It isn’t something we want to discuss. It makes us all uncomfortable. It exists! It happens more often than we want to acknowledge. Men suffer, get hurt, humiliated and abused by intimate partners and they often remain silent. #MenToo is meant to give them their voice.

Domestic Violence and Intimate Partner Violence includes stalking, sexual and physical violence, and psychological aggression by a current or former partner. In the United States, as many as one in four women and estimated one in six men are victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence is thought to be greatly underreported in Men, leaving resources for men severely compromised. Domestic violence affects not only the victim, but the families, children and co-workers. Domestic violence and IPV cause diminished psychological and physical health, decreases the quality of life, and results in decreased productivity. Male victims are often isolated, left alone, turning to no one, feeling shame, and the weight that they will not be believed. Male victims when confiding in other males are often met with ridicule, if not total disbelief. Suicide percentages in the US include a high percentage related to DV/IPV.

We need the conversation to continue, loudly and often. We need to provide a safe place for male victims and survivors of DV/IPV to be heard and offered the same resources in the same quantities as women. Abuse Has No Gender. It is #MenToo like our brothers, fathers, friends, husbands and lovers. Let them tell their stories unencumbered by judgment. Listen to them. Let them ask for and receive the resources and help they need. Let Them Heal.
