Hovering in mid-air by several well placed magnets, this Mendocino motor needs just a brief start to get going. The solar panels create current that in turn create a magnetic field that interacts with the magnetic fields of the magnet on the middle of the base. Being almost friction-free it gets up to a respectable speed. You can even see when the 'Wagon Wheel' effect kicks in as the speed matches the frame rate of the camera - the shimmering edges give it away however.
