Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No. 1 was met with immediate positive reception upon its release, fellow composer and respected music critic Robert Schumann giving exceptional praise to it.
It isn't difficult to see why; this chamber piece possesses a great variety of moods and delights throughout its four movements, each of them being unique and strong on its own. The piano part, employing techniques that Mendelssohn had learned from master pianists of the time Chopin and Liszt, is also consistently brilliant and virtuosic.
The first movement is uncommonly dramatic for Mendelssohn, though it can hardly resist pulling away from the minor tonality and dipping into more amiable waters.
