Felix Mendelssohn’s Song Without Words, Op. 19 No. 4, looks almost disarmingly simple. But beneath that simplicity lies extraordinary craftsmanship.
In this video, I explore how Mendelssohn creates expression with the smallest means: subtle anticipations, tiny changes in texture, harmonic expectations and an additional inner voice that suddenly transforms the music. I also look at tempo, pedalling and what 19th-century performance sources may tell us about Mendelssohn’s sound world.
