Keeping it simple: The remote's sliding form factor means (1) the thumb rests on the center, avoiding accidental mode changes and (2) accidental acceleration/braking from jostling or gripping the remote tightly is eliminated.

Sliding down the remote engages brakes. If released, the remote will snap shut and the Drive will be in "neutral" gear.
