The small hamlet, as it was in its early days, was established on abandoned land in 3,000 BC. But in the 5th century BC, led by Pericles, it would be transformed into one of the greatest ancient cities. Athens would be the showcase of ancient Greek civilisation, a brilliant and unique civilisation whose influence would pass down through the ages.
