The Orthodox monastery of Mega Spilaio is located near the town of Kalavryta and is built on the side of an impressive steep rocky hill. It is the oldest Orthodox monastery of Greece (it was built in 362 AD) and one of the most well-known pilgrimages of the country.
The monastery was burned down 4 times: in 840, 1400, 1640 and in 1934.
On December 8, 1943 – just 5 days before the Massacre of Kalavryta (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massacre_of_Kalavryta) – German soldiers threw to their death the monks of the monastery, the personnel and some pilgrims.
The monastery is built on the place were an Icon of the Virgin Mary (made with mastic and wax by the Apostle and Evangelist Luke) was found. The icon which survived every time the monastery was destroyed is still kept in Mega Spilaio.
