So, yeah. Mega Man 8's sound set is something I wanted to make something with for some time now, but for as long as I've been around, the only samples shared were from like, one stage's worth of samples and that's it. Mega Man 8 banks its sample selection depending on what the stage needs, not unlike some of the SNES title, but given that some extra bespoke SFX get loaded as well, Capcom was really constrained.
I went through every song, ripped every sample, wrote a simple deduplicating script so that I knew whatever I worked with were only unique samples, and... there's still duplicates. Turns out, not only did Capcom only load specific samples for specific stage, but they had multiple variants at different sample rates, lengths, etc. to fit memory constraints. Perhaps the Saturn version isn't as limited in this regard, but I haven't had a look at that yet.
At some point I'll release my findings, but for now, enjoy the music. It's certainly very different from what Mega Man 8's music is known for, and that's on purpose. As there's no utility that can actually _write_ for the SPU, I've mocked this up in FL Studio and tried to stay as close as possible to hardware limitations. *Fun fact:* The Playstation SPU is literally a beefed up SNES APU. It's got 3 times the channels, 8 times the memory, and a beefed up echo unit that can do real reverb now, but it still has the pitch modulation and noise modes.
