This lecture will explore the ways in which Mary Magdalene is portrayed in a range of apocryphal Christian texts, including the Gospel of Philip, a Psalm from the Manichaean tradition, and the Gospel of Thomas. We will see how early Christian authors developed Mary Magdalene’s character to emphasise her role as a leader of the male disciples, and her special status as a chosen recipient of Jesus's post-resurrection teachings.

Join Kim Fowler for her talk "Meeting Mary Magdalene: The Forgotten Leader of the Disciples" at the New Insights into the New Testament conference from Sept. 26-27.  Early bird pricing is available through Aug. 22.
