At 8 a.m., before visitors arrive, Colin Courtney is already at Andrews Lake trailhead near Silverton. As a snow ambassador for the San Juan Mountains Association, he greets winter visitors, shares trail tips and hands out dog poop bags — all to help protect the fragile alpine environment.

On busy weekends, about 300 people pass through the trailhead. Courtney says helping visitors stay safe and care for the mountains can make a lasting difference. If people have a great day outside, he says, they’re more likely to protect the places they love.
