Jack Hamlin signed up to join the Coastguard and performed one of the lesser-known roles of the war, asa. rescue swimmer. On D-Day Jack was tasked with swimming out to injured soldiers storming Omaha Beach, retrieving the injured men and recovering them to a ship for treatment. Some of the things that he saw and did defy belief, and his war testimony provides an essential record of the storming of the beaches of Day, and the rescue operations that took place on Omaha Beach. Jack also speaks in great detail about the sinking of the Leopoldville and the 100+ lives saved by him and his comrades during that disaster, as the troop ship was attacked and sunk by U-Boats on Christmas Eve 1944.
