Henry Taylor avidly documents an array of people in his portraiture, including those he encounters in daily life and historical figures. In swiftly and intensely produced paintings of predominantly Black figures, he renders nuanced portrayals with respect to their complex individual and shared histories. Bold, flat planes of color surround the subject of Cornerstone, who is painted with slight detail—just enough to create an impression of the cultural and political forces that have impacted his life.
See this work at the High Museum of Art through January 19, 2025, in “Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys.”
