Celebrated in his time as the “French Beethoven”, Georges Onslow (1784–1853) brought remarkable imagination and depth to chamber music. His 34 string quintets combine Classical balance with Romantic passion, often enhanced by the distinctive use of a double bass instead of a second cello. Double bassist Matthew Baker leads Ensemble Telos in this fifth volume of the complete edition, featuring world premiere recordings of String Quintets Nos. 14 and 24, in the version for string quartet and double bass. This new release continues the journey towards a complete edition of these Romantic treasures.
