While the Eaton Fire burned almost everything in Altadena, the famous Batchelder tiles survived on fireplaces, some of the only remains. Save the Tiles is an organization made up of volunteers, stonemasons and Altadena residents who work to preserve these historic tiles.
In early May, Batchelder tiles were extracted from a fireplace on Boulder Road. Annenberg Media’s Caitlin Roehmholdt walked with Maura Hudson, the COO of Save the Tiles, through the remains of the home, as Hudson described how the house had belonged to two doctors who had lived there for multiple decades. Meanwhile, the stonemasons worked to extract these tiles and volunteers helped to organize and wrap them.
