Raiza, 11 years old, stopped going to school since it was closed in mid-March due to COVID-19 emergency. Almost three months have passed since Raiza stopped going to school.
For the first time, school closings simultaneously affected children around the world. In Latin America and the Caribbean, over 154 million children, about 95 per cent of the enrolled, are temporarily out of school due to the COVID-19 . But in rural areas such as Raisa's home, in the Ecuadorian Amazon, the impact is different. There is no internet access there.
Raiza is part of an education program aimed at school children with educational lagging. This initiative has been supported by UNICEF and its implementing partner Desarrollo y Autogestión (DyA) since 2016, the year in which Ecuador suffered an earthquake leaving many losses and destroying several schools on the country’s coast. This situation interrupted studies of many children.
