🌊🚢 Meet the R/V Neil Armstrong — the East Coast's primary long-range oceanographic research vessel!
Based out of our port in Woods Hole, Armstrong’s crew services the Ocean Observatories Initiative and other National Science Foundation-funded studies of changing ocean conditions, from the sub-Arctic to the tropics.
With an advanced suite of acoustic sensors embedded in its hull, this 238-foot research vessel can map the seafloor (and below) in stunning detail. Armstrong also serves as a testbed for next-generation technology, such as the ocean robot Nereid Under Ice and the X-spar meteorological buoy, designed for long-term deployments in remote ocean regions.
Owned by the Office of Naval Research as part of the UNOLS Academic Research Fleet, R/V Neil Armstrong shows how federal investment in ocean infrastructure ensures US leadership in science and innovation!
