At nearly 60 years old, JR is quite possibly the only long-beaked echidna you can see in a zoo anywhere in the world.
Long-beaked echidnas are truly mysterious. No one has ever seen one lay an egg or raise a puggle in the wild, and they’ve never bred in a zoo setting.
Native to New Guinea, particularly the mountainous regions , the Eastern Long-beaked Echidna faces serious threats from land clearing, traditional hunting, and illegal wildlife trafficking.
You can find JR at nguwing nura – Nocturnal Country, Taronga’s immersive nocturnal habitat, where he shares space with two other monotreme species. It’s a rare opportunity to witness the magic of these ancient egg-laying mammals all in one place.
